 About the Book

Men have always thought themselves interesting subjects - worthy of a book. An epigram without a sting is little better than a platitude, and this admitted fact will serve as an excuse for the presence of many a sharp thrust in the following pages. An epigram without a sting is little better than a platitude, and this admitted fact will serve as an excuse for the presence of many a sharp thrust in the following pages. A sermon in a word, a poem in a couplet, a cartoon in a phrase, has been the aim throughout. That all the sage and smart things said of men have been gathered together is not contended- but enough is presented to show that men are fearfully and wonderfully made, or that their critics are a distempered lot. The compiler trusts that no attempt will be made to make the volume a biological or zoological text book in sewing-circles- but should this be done, - well, Shakespeare has said, Let the galled jade wince.
