Nearby was his fellow-poet Percy Shelley and his wife Mary, with whom Byron soon came firm friends. Then arrived Claire Claimont, firmly set on seducing Byron (she had successfully bedded him once, in England, and was carrying his child). Dr William Polidori, a young,m impetuous and eccentric doctor, completed the party. The comings and goings were extensive - Byron trying to escape Claire, who dragged him into bed despite himself- Shelley concerned about Claire, but worried about Mary- Polidori getting drunk and upsetting the already scandalised Geneva inhabitants. One evening they all started telling ghost stories, and proposed that each should write one- the result was Mary Shelleys iconic Frankenstein. Later, Polidori was to write The Vampyre - the first vampire novel. Oh, yes - Summer in Switzerland wasnt what anyhone had expected.
